Faeger Participates in CPI Forum on Agricultural Methane Abatement Financing in Indonesia

On June 30, 2026, Faeger's Director of Southeast Asia Business, Kazuki Sakamoto spoke online at the international forum "Opportunities and Strategy for Methane Abatement Financing for Agriculture Sector in Indonesia," hosted by the Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The forum brought together representatives from the Government of Indonesia, international financial institutions, development partners, and private-sector organizations to discuss financing mechanisms and carbon market approaches for accelerating methane emission reductions in the agricultural sector.

Background

Indonesia has committed under its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (Enhanced NDC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31.89% by 2030—or 43.2% with international support. The country is also a signatory to the Global Methane Pledge, aiming to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030.

Agriculture—including rice cultivation, livestock, and agricultural waste management—is one of Indonesia's major sources of methane emissions while also representing significant mitigation potential. However, financing agricultural methane reduction projects remains challenging due to fragmented project structures, limited bankability, and uncertain revenue models.

The forum was organized to facilitate discussions among policymakers, financial institutions, development organizations, and private-sector stakeholders on effective financing pathways and market mechanisms to scale methane mitigation in agriculture.

Faeger's Contribution

Mr. Sakamoto joined the session titled "Development and Financing Process of Agricultural Methane Abatement Projects: Lessons Learned from Case Studies and Practices."

Together with speakers from organizations including the World Bank, BPDLH (Indonesia Environment Fund), PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (PT SMI), and CarbonFarm, participants discussed:

* Lessons learned from developing agricultural methane mitigation projects
* Financing platforms and market mechanisms to accelerate methane reduction projects in Indonesia

Drawing on Faeger's experience in developing agricultural carbon credit projects in Japan, Mr. Sakamoto shared practical insights into project implementation, financing structures, and carbon market development. He also introduced Faeger's ongoing JCM demonstration project in the Philippines as an example of supporting agricultural decarbonization across Asia.

Looking Ahead

Faeger continues to expand its agricultural decarbonization initiatives beyond Japan by leveraging its expertise in agricultural carbon credits and participating in international carbon market mechanisms, including the JCM.

Through collaboration with governments, research institutions, financial organizations, and private-sector partners, Faeger remains committed to advancing sustainable agriculture and developing practical financing solutions that accelerate climate action across Asia.
