Faeger held a workshop on paddy field AWD carbon credits with the local government in Vietnam
On January 9, 2025, a workshop was held at the National Agricultural Extension Center (NAEC) in Hanoi, Vietnam, jointly organized by NAEC and Faeger Vietnam Co. Ltd. The event brought together experts from Japan and Vietnam specializing in AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) carbon credits for paddy fields.
The workshop was held with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and NAEC in Vietnam, as well as the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) and the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) from Japan, with Faeger serving as the organizer.
The theme focused on comparing AWD technology and MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification of greenhouse gas emissions) within the framework of a large-scale project covering 1 million hectares in Vietnam, supervised by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the World Bank, and the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). Discussions aimed to facilitate the smooth registration of methodologies and design of guidelines for JCM in Vietnam, as well as to explore efficient approaches for implementing JCM projects in the country.
”The reduction of methane emissions from paddy fields through AWD has become a significant topic in Vietnam, where the paddy field area is 3.5 times larger than that of Japan. Among these efforts, the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) is gaining attention as a bilateral initiative between Japan and Vietnam. However, in addition to establishing institutional frameworks and mechanisms, prior scientific and technical agreements are essential.
This workshop marked a significant step forward in scientific and technical discussions. Constructive and forward-looking opinions were exchanged by both parties, making it a very positive start.
Moving forward, we aim to continue advancing discussions to contribute to the optimization of frameworks and methodologies and to expedite agreements between the two countries." - Yusuke Takai, the director of Faeger Vietnam Co. Ltd.
